DIY Beauty: Sugar Scrub

Sugar scrubs are a great way to exfoliate your skin and leave your legs feeling silky smooth after shaving, but store bought scrubs are so expensive!I love using the Burt’s Bees Cranberry and Pomegranate Scrub. The tub of product runs at $13.00, which is cheap compared to other brands, and it does not last as long as you would like, so buying sugar scrubs quickly gets expensive.

Instead of going without this ritual of exfoliating, I did some research on simple and cheap sugar scrub recipes that you can make at home. I found two easy recipes that looked promising-a simple brown sugar scrub and a white sugar scrub recipe.
Usually, sugar scrubs are made with brown sugar and an essential oil. The grittiness of the brown sugar helps to remove dead skin cells and smooth skin out. I wanted to try the white sugar scrub to see which sugar works the best.
Both recipes cost less than $6 dollars to make.

Simple Brown Sugar Body Scrub

This recipe is foolproof and you already have the ingredients in your kitchen pantry.

Just mix equal parts brown sugar and olive oil together, add a spoonful of honey, and that’s it!
You can make just enough for one shower or a lot at once and save it for later.
Once in the shower, just scrub some all over and rinse off.
I didn’t notice an olive oil smell, but if you are worried about the smell, any other oil, like coconut, will work as a substitute.

This one is simple also. The recipe makes a jar full of product.
Mix together: 2 ½ Cups white sugar
1 Cup olive oil (or other oils)
5 Tablespoons of a citrus juice (I used lime)
The finished product will be a little runny.

Since body scrubs exfoliate and strip away dead skin, you shouldn’t use them more than once a day. If you only plan on using the scrub to get smooth legs after shaving, using the scrub only when you shave should be fine.
To achieve soft, smooth, silky legs, shave as you normally would. After that, apply the sugar scrub to your legs and scrub it all over. (It feels really good, FYI!) Rinse off the scrub and then shave again to remove all the dead skin. Then moisturize like normally after the shower.

Both DIY scrubs did the job, but between the two, my favorite was the Simple Brown Sugar Scrub. I definitely noticed a difference between the two sugars. The brown sugar was grittier than the white sugar and left my skin softer and smoother. Right after I rinsed the scrub off, my skin already felt smooth and my legs looked great!
